Hi, Heidi Perhaps you misunderstand -- the Collaboratory is not a business seeking revenue. It's a project of the Reynolds Journalism Institute. However, we help our members think through issues and explore opportunities such as business models for…

Hhhmmm for generations news has been a sponsored endeavor. Advertiser paid the way for journalism. I see nothing here speaking of how you plan or who you plan to be sponsoreb by. This looks like a serious flaw in your stratedgy. May I suggest that…

Anne: I respect your advice, but I do indeed think traffic levels matter, even to local sites. For a couple of reasons: 1) Google News does indeed bring in lots of traffic, if you can get listed there. That's data you can use to support higher adve…

If you're using a CMS that allows you to set up multiple user accounts and specify permissions for each user, and if that function drives the byline that gets displayed, that should do it. - Amy Gahran

Well, you don't necessarily have to pay the other contributors. If you could just find a way to get some other bylines in there (maybe invite some commentary?) Google won't care about that. They just want to see multiple names. Google Alerts can be…

Getting listed in Google News is mostly about meeting their technical requirements. Also, have multiple authors on your site. In my experience, once you jump through those hoops, you can apply for indexing, and then generally you get indexed -- alt…

The RJI Collaboratory works with entrepreneurial journalists, citizens and organizations to create strategies and tools for high-quality Web-based journalism.

WHY we're looking into the incubator concept:

* Problem: In 2008, traditional news organizations continued to shrink or close their doors. They laid off more than 15,000 journalists, resulting in a significant loss of the good journalism so vi… Continue

"Reconstruction" Redux

There's been some fascinating discussion online about the "The Reconstruction of American Journalism" report issued last week by former executive editor of The Washington Post Len Downie, and Michael Schudson, professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism -- the report recommends, in part, an increase in government funding for news.

Much of the back-and-forth has focused on the… Continue

Fund My Media Startup: Index to Session Transcripts

On Oct. 1, Amy Gahran of the RJI Collaboratory liveblogged Fund My Media Startup, a workshop by J-Lab presented at the conference of the Online News Association in San Francisco.

We've extracted the text from the original CoverItLive liveblog and have posted it as a series of posts, to spur the imagination of Collaboratory participants.

Here is an index to the sessions:

When I tried to sign in, the system told me it needed to verify my e-mail address. OK, I thought, that's not unheard of. So when I verified - voila, it told me I had a new account. ????

Thanks for the welcome Adam. Those freaky bogus users are now turning up on Twitter and sending Follow requests. If she's cute, but has that slightly odd gaze of a tired hooker, banish her!

Thanks. I just attended the week-long Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment, which was great. Your presentation, Adam, was extremely helpful for those of us working to create a new biz model centered on the Web and new media. Since I returned I've added Google Ads to my site and have approached pubs with large online presence about contributing to their blogs (to drive readers to my own site), started looking for corporate underwriters, and most important, added an RJI widget to my site.

Thanks. We're in kind of an expansion mode this year, plus grappling with some new systems and technology, like social networking. I'm kind of looking around for an intern or part-time student help. As much as anything, I want to learn from them. Millennials/Gen-Y'ers have some quirks but also bring some interesting strengths to the table, based on our limited experiences, so far. This would be a position that allowed the student to work remotely. My wife and I operate the business with 1.5 other people. Our main employee lives across the street and two houses down, and we maybe only see her twice a month, so I'm not trying to tie anyone to our little patch of Mississippi.
